Uganda's Anti-Gay Law: A Dark Day for Human Rights

Uganda has enacted one of the world's harshest anti-gay laws, leading to life imprisonment for anyone convicted of homosexuality. The legislation imposes the death penalty for "aggravated homosexuality," which includes cases involving HIV-positive individuals, minors, and other vulnerable people. This move has provoked outrage from international human rights organizations such as Amnesty International, which called it a "dark day for human rights in Uganda". Furthermore, the United States and other Western countries have criticized the decision, with some considering cutting aid to Uganda. The United Nations and the US have also warned that Uganda's progress in combating HIV is now in "grave jeopardy" due to this legislation. Ugandan campaign groups are expected to challenge the law in court on grounds that it is discriminatory and violates LGBTQ+ rights.
